Two Parks Canada spots in western Newfoundland are hosting free learn-to camp sessions this summer. Port au Choix National Historic Site will run the program Aug. 6-7, while Gros Morne National Park will offer it Aug. 13-14.

Offered in collaboration with MEC (Mountain Equipment Co-op), the Learn-to Camp program introduces people to the skills and knowledge needed to enjoy camping and a wide variety of activities safely in the outdoors. The program was launched in 2011.

Camping gear is provided — all people need to bring is a sleeping bag to learn basic camping skills, such as how to set up a tent and safely light a campfire. They will spend the night in a tent under the stars, and connect with nature through activities such as hiking, photography, storytelling and star-gazing. The Port au Choix Learn-to Camp event will be supported by the Qalipu First Nation and will incorporate Indigenous knowledge into the event’s activities and programs. The Gros Morne session will also incorporate Indigenous knowledge. To register, call 1-844-365-2646 or visit parkscanada.ca/learntocamp.
