Was one of three gunfire incidents in a three-hour period late Wednesday and early Thursday in Pointe St-Charles, Montreal West and LaSalle.

A shooting incident in Montreal West early Thursday has claimed a second life.

A 17-year-old male died from injuries suffered in the shooting after being transported to hospital in critical condition, Montreal’s police department said Thursday evening.

At around 2 a.m., three individuals in a car heading toward the corner of Ronald Drive and Avon Rd. were targeted by shots fired from a location that has yet to be determined. An 18-year-old male was killed on the scene.

The third person in the vehicle had fled the scene by the time police arrived.

These are the 14th and 15th homicides of the year on the Island of Montreal, police said. An investigation is ongoing.

The Montreal West incident was part of a trio of shootings that happened between 11 p.m. Wednesday and 2 a.m. Thursday and injured two other people. The other shootings occurred in Pointe-St-Charles and the borough of LaSalle.

Montreal police said they have made arrests in connection with one of the incidents.

A woman who identified herself as Rachel and lives near the site of the Montreal West shooting told the Montreal Gazette she was just drifting off to sleep at about 2 a.m. when she heard two loud “pops” and went outside just in time to see her neighbour in the street calling 911. A car carrying at least two people had crashed into a parked vehicle, she added.

“It’s very frightening,” she said. “I ran around locking our windows because my children were sleeping and I didn’t know where this (third) person ran. My kids play on that street — there’s a lot of kids on the street, there’s a daycare here.”

Rachel said that after sunrise the crime scene remained on the street and she had to explain to her two youngest children, age 10 and 11, what had happened, if only because the site of the murder was clearly visible from her daughter’s bedroom window.

“They could see them putting … a black body bag into a black vehicle. I had to explain to my kids that what they were seeing was that someone was shot and killed on their street.”

Suspects were taken into custody not far from the scene of the fatal shooting and are expected to be questioned by investigators.

About three hours earlier, around 11 p.m. Wednesday, two men aged 18 and 20 were found critically wounded by gunfire at the corner of Ash Ave. and Dick-Irvin St. near Le Ber Park in Pointe-St-Charles.

Multiple shell casings were found at the scene and police believe the shootings occurred after an altercation between two groups degenerated. The shootings took place just a few feet away from a daycare centre and several residences.

The 20-year-old man is now out of danger, police spokesperson Caroline Chèvrefils said Thursday evening. The 18-year-old is in critical but stable condition, she said.

In the third incident, which occurred at about 12:15 a.m., shots were fired from a moving car toward a bar at the corner of Dollard Ave. and Saguenay St. in LaSalle. No injuries were reported, but at least one bullet impact was found on the building.

Crime scenes were set up at the site of each shooting. It remained unclear on Thursday whether the incidents were linked.
