Look, it’s been a weird week. It’s been a weird month. It’s been a weird year. Why not add a weird movie about a boy who has angel wings to the mix?

Ricky is a 2009 French movie about a baby who sprouts angel wings, and while it’s exactly as weird as it sounds, it’s also perhaps a better film than what you’re imagining. Based on the recent surge of interest in this over 10-years-old film, I assume someone famous must have recommended Ricky as a quarantine watch on Good Morning America or something. So if you’re just hearing about Ricky for the first time, here’s a little more info on the film.

Ricky is a fantasy movie about a baby boy who sprouts angel wings. If that plot sounds strange, cute, and ever-so-slightly disturbing, you’re right on the money. This strange film comes from acclaimed French director François Ozon, a key figure in French New Wave cinema who is perhaps best known in America for his 2002 film 8 femmes and 2003 film Swimming Pool. More recently, Ozon directed the 2016 WWI film Frantz, which was nominated for three César Awards.

Ricky is not as well-known as some of Ozon’s other films, though it was nominated for an award at the 59th Berlin International Film Festival. French actress Alexandra Lamy stars as a struggling mother named Katie, who lives with her daughter Lisa (Mélusine Mayance) in welfare housing in Paris. Then Katie has another child, an infant boy they name Ricky (Arthur Peyret), who has some… unusual quality. Namely, he sprouts angel wings and begins to fly. Sometimes the second baby is not, in fact, the easiest!

If I’ve piqued your interest, good news: You can buy or rent the 2009 Ricky movie on digital platforms including iTunes, YouTube, and Google Play. While the price varies depending on the platform, the film costs between $2.99 – $3.99 to rent and between $9.99 – $12.99 to buy. Ricky (2009) is not currently available to buy or rent on Amazon Prime.

No, sorry. You’ll have to get out your wallet if you want to watch the baby with angel wings movie.

There is, in the form of a two-minute scene from the film in which Ricky sprouts his baby wings. If you can stomach the mild body horror, go ahead and watch this weird, fascinating clip below. And if you’re into it, you can always rent the film on demand. Enjoy!
